Active members of Birlik Student Assembly of S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University held a round-table conference entitled “Language as the Basis of People's Culture” on September 22, 2014.

The purpose of the event was to introduce students to specific linguistic features of various diasporas' languages and demonstrate uniqueness and specificity of each language.

This roundtable conference brought together students of different ethnic backgrounds. They shared their problems, made suggestions on how to improve the linguistic situation. Participants of the conference made reports on specific features of their native languages. Students of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies Karina Merzhoyeva and Makhambet Makulov told about the history of the English language in Kazakhstan, as well as the history of the Kazakh language. Student of the Department of Psychology and Pedagogy Eset Khaykhoroyeva told about the Ingush language.

The Day of Languages of the People of Kazakhstan was established by decree of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev on January 20, 1998. It is celebrated on the 22nd of September. At present time, along with the Kazakh language, children are taught more than 10 languages in Kazakhstan's schools. Weekend schools are available at national cultural centers. Newspapers are published in German, Korean, Uighur, and Ukrainian. Tele- and radio programs are also available in different languages. This gives an opportunity for representatives of all national minorities in Kazakhstan to study their history and culture acquiring knowledge in their native languages.

According to Tlek Masalim, a specialist of the Division of Education and Social Affairs of S. Toraighyrov PSU, every citizen has the right to speak his or her native language, choose the language of communication, education, learning and creativity. All conditions are created for that. 'For example, our University has Birlik Student Assembly and a reading hall of the Library of People of Kazakhstan that are aimed at strengthening inter-ethnic unity, harmony and cohesion among students of different ethnic backgrounds.'

It should be noted that, in accordance with the President's idea of the trinity of languages, S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University has implemented a multilingual education program with teaching in Kazakh, Russian and English.
