History of the Department

The Department of Mechanics and Oil and Gas Engineering was established in July 2009 as a result of a merger of the departments that were responsible for teaching Descriptive Geometry and Engineering Graphics, Strength of Materials, Theoretical Mechanics, Machine Components and Design Principles, and Theory of Mechanisms and Machines. The Department received a license for the Bachelor's program in 5В070800 Oil and Gas Engineering in 2009.

Head of the Department

At the present moment the Department is headed by Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Gaini Zhumagaliyevna Seytenova.

In 2001, G. Zh. Seytenova graduated from S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University with an academic degree in Chemistry.

In 2003, she earned a master’s degree in Chemistry from S. Toraighyrov PSU.

In 2005, she enrolled in a postgraduate program offered by the Department of Catalysis and Petrochemistry of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. In 2010, she successfully defended her thesis for the degree of Candidate of Chemical Sciences.

In 2005-2011, she worked as Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Technology.

In 2011, G. Zh. Seytenova worked as Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanics and Oil and Gas Engineering. She teaches academic and vocational subjects in the Russian, Kazakh and English languages. She has a wide range of certificates of completion of professional development courses, including those held in Germany (Bonn). She has also developed two educational programs in the respective field.

The students majoring in Oil and Gas Engineering supervised by G. Zh. Seytenova have become the winners of national and international Olympiads and forums for several times. She holds a number of letters of appreciation for active involvement in preparation of the winning teams.

G. Zh. Seytenova has also developed various tasks for student Olympiads and has been included into the panel of judges of national and international Olympiads in Chemistry for schoolchildren held by the Yertys Daryny Scientific and Practical Center.

In 2014-2015, the scientific research work funded by the grant from LLP Neftekhim Company Ltd was carried out under the supervision of G. Zh. Seytenova.

She is the author of over 40 scholarly research papers and a study guide “Fundamentals of Oil Refining”.

Curriculum Support and Development

Complexes of teaching materials for all courses are developed by the leading academics of the Department. These complexes include work programs, lecture notes, tests, methodological materials for practical training sessions, laboratory works, both in Russian and Kazakh. Academics of the Department write and publish study guides.

The Department works in close cooperation with all industrial companies of the region, leading HEIs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and neighboring countries.

The Department of Mechanics and Oil and Gas Engineering has established its branch at Kompaniya Neftekhim Ltd. LLP.

Education

Educational work is carried out in 9 main areas: university-wide events, state holidays; organizational events; moral education; labor education and career guidance; patriotic education; legal education; healthy lifestyles promotion, sports and tourism; environmental education; work in the hostel.

Each student group has an adviser who regularly meets students, knows the general situation in the group and individual problems of each student. Every year, the Department holds a matriculation ceremony for its freshmen. It has also become a tradition to visit theaters, museums and concert performances together. The Department works with underachieving students to address the causes of underperformance and keeps in touch with such students' parents. Meetings with curators are devoted to the problems of academic progress, attendance, behavior culture, etc.

Research

Academics of the Department regularly participate in professional development courses and workshops held in Kazakhstan and neighboring countries.

A contractual research project entitled “Development of the Gas Supply System for FORWARD-PV LLP” for the total sum of KZT 100,000 was concluded and is currently being executed (Project Leader: Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor G.Zh. Seytenova).

Results of the project entitled “Methods of Calculating the Material Balance while Setting up the Production of Methyl Tert-butyl Ether” have been successfully introduced into production.
