Marina Olshanskaya, professor at  Central European University, and Alexander Bely, professor at Toraighyrov University, gave a guest lecture on the topic “Decarbonization: what is it and why is it important for everyone”.

 

 

The speakers told about modern ideas about the causes of global climate change, key findings of the latest - the 6th Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), observed trends in climate change in Kazakhstan;  decarbonization as a process of reducing the carbon footprint, examples of corporate decarbonization strategies and methodological techniques for their construction.

 

 The professors paid special attention to the development of investment models for decarbonization and attraction of the necessary climate finance, gave examples of  implemented "green" projects in Kazakhstan using support mechanisms.

 

 Toraighyrov University has the opportunity to create its own decarbonization strategy and implement the necessary measures and projects.  In this direction, the work of the Department of Geography and Tourism will be continued, taking into account the commitments made by Kazakhstan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
