PSU again hosted a meeting of the cinema club “Cinema as a historical source”. The film of the director Alexei Balabanov “Brother” (“Brat”, 1997) was considered in detail.

It's been 20 years since the picture was screened. As the chairman of the cinema club Aslan Azerbayev noted, the film in a complete way shows the life of the end of the twentieth century. This is a time of confusion, disorganization, “degeneration” of morals and prosperity of banditry.

“In 2007, Viktor Sukhorukov, who played one of the main parts, said that this picture could be called a film textbook”, Aslan Dybysbekovich said.

The main part in the film “Brother” was played by Sergei Bodrov (Junior). His character Danila Bagrov wantsjustice and sincere love, he is devoted to his family, his brother, despite the fact that he knows about his betrayal. At the same time, he is able to deprive a person’s life without pang of guilt, he is convinced that he is fighting evil. A lot of quotations were taken from his words.

Students perceived the film “Brother” ambiguously. Some saw the characteristic life of the 90's in the film, without in the wet and sunless Petersburg. Others noticed all the everyday trivial matters  which are characteristic for  the period. The image of Danila Bagrov was regarded as contradictory. The audience did not arrive at a common view on whether he is a positive or negative character in the film.
