The chess team of PSU students won the second prize at the 8th Summer Universiade held among HEIs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

This tournament brought together students from all over Kazakhstan who came to compete for the title of the best chess player.

The Summer Universiade includes 32 kinds of sports: basketball, volleyball, athletics, freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, judo, togyz kumalak, swimming, boxing, kazaksha kures, badminton, taekwondo, football, chess, table tennis, multidiscipline event, karate, fencing, beach volleyball, handball, archery, orienteering, billiards, rugby, sambo, kickboxing, beach soccer, tennis, shooting, weightlifting and hand-to-hand combat.

Having shown great results, the team of S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University finished second in the team event.

The PSU team included 6 players: Nazar Ospanov, Daulet Kuderin, Nurlan Gaziyev, Amangeldy Zharylgazinov, Gulzhan Ishimova, and Botagoz Kamidolla. The competition lasted 5 days. Both individual and team events were held. The prize-winners were awarded with cups, medals and diplomas.

According to Vladimir Teykhrib, the team coach, the popularity of chess among the youth is growing every year. “This Universiade is characterized by highly-skilled participants and great intensity of the competition. It was not easy for our team to achieve this result, to say the least. Our players had to be very focused as every point could prove decisive,” he said.
