Today, the citizens of the city honored the memory of those affected during the years of repression. Among the participants were scholars from Toraighyrov University, who for several years have been working to find and rehabilitate the names of the victims of repression.

“On the Day of Memory for the Victims of Political Repression and Famine, we honor those who suffered unjustly in one of the most merciless tragedies of the last century. Our ancestors had to endure a cruel time: mass famine, repressions, and shootings. Repressions eradicated the entire elite of the Kazakh intelligentsia. Among them are our fellow countrymen: writer Zhusipbek Aimauytov, director and founder of Kazakh theatrical art Zhumat Shanin, journalist Kadir Tayshykov,” said the akim of the region, Asaiyn Baikhanov.

During the years of forced deportation, people from all regions of the former Union were resettled in Kazakhstan. Locals, despite the dire situation, helped as they could. This tragedy united many peoples.
