Easy way to stay.

Washington is the capital of the United State of America. It is situated in the District of Columbia and is like no one city of the USA. It is the world’s largest one-industry city. And that industry is government. Washington was named after the first president George Washington. He selected the place for the capital and a French engineer designed the city
It is easy to go to Washington now.  You can go there by air-plane from any large town of the USA. There are also fast trains and you can go by car if you have it. But in the old days people had to travel several days to get from New York to Washington. People went there by coaches driven by horses or went on horseback. They stopped at inns to have a rest or to eat there and sleep.
There is the story about a congressman who stopped at an inn one night and asked for a place to stay. The innkeeper wanted to know about a man and asked, “Are you a Democrat or a Republican?”
“Why do you ask?” said the congressman.
“Well”, said the innkeeper, “I always want to please my guests and I know that the Republican likes to have food and rest? But a Democrat is more interested in the care and feeding of the horse. ”
“Well, it so happens” said the congressman, “that I am a Republican, but my horse is a Democrat.”

New Plymouth

In September, 1620, a small ship, left Mayflower, left England. About one hundred people had to leave there country because of the religious ideas. After seven long weeks they saw land. It was America.
Sixteen men left the Mayflower and went ashore. In the evening they came back to the ship with maize. They found the maize in the beach where the Indians had left it. Nobody in Europe had seen maize then, but when the people on the boat tried it, they liked it very much.
Next day was Sunday and everybody had a rest. On Monday, some men went ashore again and this time they took women with them. The women had to wash the clothes. Since that time Monday has been a washing day in America.
During the next five weeks the men from the Mayflower were looking for a good place to live. The weather was very cold, more and more men fell ill, but at last they found a good place with a harbour for ships, some fields and forests near it and a small river. The people began to build a village there. By January, 1621, there were already two streets in the village, and they called it “New Plymouth.”

Environment and Ecology.

Ecology is the science of how living things are related to their environment. Many people all over the world are concerned about the ecology today. The word «ecology » came from the Greek which means «home». This idea of «home» includes the whole planet of ours. We must protect our planet from littering, air pollution, water pollution, destruction of natural resources. We know that polluted air, land and water are harmful to plants, animals and people. Many territories, lakes, rivers, seas, oceans and the atmosphere are polluted with all kinds of technological, chemical, nuclear and other wastes. Awful harm is caused to our home by nuclear tests, atom bombs and accidents on the atomic power stations. How can we keep our earth clean? Don’t buy drinks in plastic bottles. These bottles can not be recycled, and plastic won’t  even degrade. If you throw this bottle, it will still litter the earth forever. Only buy water and other drinks in aluminum cans or glass bottles. Buy milk and juice in cartons. Glass, aluminum and carton can be recycled. The energy saved from one recycled aluminum can will operate a television set for three hours. If you throw an aluminum can out of the train window, it will still liter the earth up too 500 years later. If you throw the glass bottle you liter the earth forever. It takes 500,000 trees just to make the newspapers we read every Sunday The electric power stations burn coal to produce the energy that keeps your light on. That burning coal gives of gases, that – acid rains. So, save electric power. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Turn off the TV, the stereo when you are not watching or listening to.Do not cut wild flowers. The last candidate.

The entrance examinations at one of the Moscow drama schools were almost over. Many young girls and boys had already given their performances. The famous actors who were examing  were already  so tired that it was not easy to impress them. Therefore when they saw the last candidate appear on the stage they only wanted him to finish his performance as quickly as possible.
Indeed the boy`s acting made a poor impression on the teachers. It was clear he was not talented. His face couldn`t attract the audience, only his smile was rather pleasant.
The Director of the school stopped the young man who was still performing something.
The boy understood everything at once. «I haven`t passed my examination, have I?» he asked. «I am sorry to say not,» answered the Director of the school. «You see it is not enough to know a few poems and entertaining songs. An actor must act. To act is to turn into another person on the stage, but I` m afraid you can`t do it.»
On his way home the Director remembered how the boy was criticized for his performance and felt sorry for him. But he always told him the truth.
The next day when the Director was about to finish work he saw a late visitor came into office. The stranger was an elderly woman who was wearing an old hat and very thick glasses. Her face was very serious and she looked concerned about something. She said she wanted to talk the Director about her son.
« I am the mother of the boy who didn`t pass the examination, how she had helped him.»
The case was difficult but still the Director wanted the woman to hear the truth about her son. As soon as she stopped he began: « You see, an actor must act. To be an actor is to turn into another person!» He hadn`t finished his sentence. The «old lady» took of her hat and the glasses and smiled.        It took the Director a minute to remember where he had seen the boy`s face.

The Power Of Imagination

Mr. Brown lived in America, but he liked traveliing very much. He made trips to Europe and Asia, and he visited India too. Once after a long trip from England to America he arrived at a small country place. There was a small hotel there. Mr Brown got to the hotel late in the evening. At the hotel he asked the receptionist whether there were any vacant rooms there. At that moment another traveller came to the hotel and asked the receptionist for a room too. The receptionist checked if there were any vacant rooms. The only vacant room he could offer was a double room.
“Will it be convenient to you if you share the room?” the receptionist asked. “It’ll be less expensive for you, you’ll each pay half.”
At first they didn’t like the idea, but just then it began raining heavily and they were too tired to go to another hotel. They spoke to each other and told the receptionist that they agreed to spend the night in the same room.
A porter showed them to their room, took in their things and wished them good night. Soon the two men went to sleep.
Suddenly Mr Brown heard some noise. He opened his eyes but didn’t see anything. It was quite dark.
“What’s the matter?” Mr Brown asked in surprise. The second traveller answered, “I’m very sorry, I had to wake you up. I’m not well. Please, open the window quickly.”
Mr Brown got out of bed and began looking for matches, but he couldn’t find them in the dark, so he tried to find the window. It took him some time and at last he thought he had found it. He couldn’t open the window. As the voice of the traveller became weaker and weaker, Mr Brown took a chair and broke the window with it. The man said he was much better. Then the two of them slept until morning.
When they woke up the next morning they were surprised to see that Mr Brown had broken to pieces a large mirror.
