On November 28, 2013, the second literary ball was held at the Student Club of S. Toraighyrov PSU by the Department of Russian Philology.
This time, it was dedicated to the Prima Donnas of World Literature. The guest of this event could see Mrs. Hudson, Scarlett O'Hara, Miss Marple and Mary Poppins. The theme of such events is changed every year in order to add novelty and cover the works of poets and writers of different ages.
A literary ball serves several purposes: it provokes interest to the study of the XVIII-XIX centuries literature, it is also intended to revive the great tradition of balls, draw attention to the rich history of Russian and foreign cultures and preserve moral values for the younger generation.
The students and teachers participated in the preparation of this event, writing the script, preparing the interior, costumes, selecting music, and defining the roles. One could feel the excitement of the Department members during the preparation. This time, students demonstrated some scenes from such immortal masterpieces, as Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, Pride and Prejudice, and the Marriage of Figaro. Students from the Phil-402 group showed an excerption from Once again on the Emperor's New Clothes by Leonid Filatov. The students managed to convey the artistic value of these works in a very skillful, elegant and fervent way. Cotillions and minuets were performed by the second year students.
The entire program was a reproduction of balls for young people held in the past. The guests of this event took part in intellectual games, such as quizzes, rebuses and charades, reading riddles, rhyme-games, etc. All questions were answered and all winners received prizes.
Everything new is actually well-forgotten old. So no wonder that long-existing traditions may seem quite exotic. During this event, the luxuriousness and extravagance of social events with gallant men and beautiful ladies turned into a grand performance!
