S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University opened a new classroom named after Galym Akhmetov, a prominent mathematician and veteran academic of PSU.

The opening ceremony was attended by G. Akhmetov's friends, relatives, former colleagues, and administration of S. Toraighyrov PSU.

Galym Akhmetov had worked at the University for 50 years holding academic and managerial positions. He was a Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Informatics of S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University.

Rector of S. Toraighyrov Pavlodar State University, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Serik Omirbayev noted that Galym Akhmetov's path and legacy are an inexhaustible source of knowledge and inspiration for students. “I am convinced that here, in this classroom, Galym Akhmetov's successors will gain enough knowledge to make discoveries worthy of the name of a true scientists,” said Serik Omirbayev.

“Galym Akhmetov played an important role in the history of education of Pavlodar region and the Republic of Kazakhstan. He started his path in science when Pavlodar Industrial University was founded. As they University grew and developed, Galym Akhmetov was gradually turning into one of the most outstanding mathematicians of our region. Tens of thousands of students attended his lectures in various courses of higher mathematics. His name is well-known, both in our Republic and abroad. He made enormous contribution to the development of the mathematical science and education,” said Boranbay Skakov, a family friend and Honored Worker of MIA RK.

The opening ceremony began with a presentation of an information stand about Galym Akhmetov's life and works. There were photographs of different years showing him as a student, lecturer and scientists.

Then there was a presentation of the book entitled “The Formula of Life” dedicated to the memory of the scientist. The book contains the memories of Galym Akhmetov's relatives, friends, students and colleagues telling what a remarkable person he was. According to his daughter, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Head of the Department of Philosophy, Humanities and Social Sciences of S. Toraighyrov PSU Gaukhar Akhmetova, a new scholarship named after Galym Akhmetov has been established for the best students of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Information Technology.

G. Akhmetov is the author of over 80 academic works, including 1 monograph, 20 study guides and teaching materials in higher mathematics, both in Kazakh and Russian. Galym Akhmetov was awarded the Veteran of Labor medal for his contribution to the development of science and achievements in teaching and research. He also had a number of diplomas from MES, 2 medals of an Honored Worker of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the title of an Honorary Head of Department at S. Toraighyrov PSU.

Galym Akhmetov was a judge at many academic competitions in mathematics, supervisor of students' research projects (some of them were prize-winners at competitions of the national level), Master's theses, reviewer of research projects and theses/dissertations.
