The Lessons of History devoted to the Day of Memory of Political Repressions Victims were held for undergraduate and graduate students of S. Toraighyrov PSU on May 31, 2014.
President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev signed a special decree on April 5, 1997, according to which, May 31 was announced the Day of Political Repressions. This is the day of memory of political prisoners unjustly convicted on charges of anti-Soviet activities and espionage. Millions of Soviet citizens became victims of political repressions.
Head of the Department of History of Kazakhstan, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Kayrat Battalov noted in his speech that this date has a special meaning for Kazakhstan, as our Republic was a place of deportation for millions of Soviet citizens. 'We must use a wise approach to studying our history making sure that the tragic lessons of the past will never be forgotten by future generations, since this is the key to stability and prosperity of our country!', said Kayrat Battalov.
Among the lecturers were members of the Faculty of History and Law, namely, Head of the Department of the Assembly of People of Kazakhstan, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Gulfayrus Zhapekova and Candidate of Political Sciences Gani Yelmuratov.
Senior lecturer of the Department of Sociology and Political Science Saule Moldabayeva told about the system of concentration camps, in particular the Akmola camp for wives of traitors. Her colleague Saliya Sakenova noted in her report that such Memory Days clearly show that people in our country have respect for the memory of those tragic times and the people who became victims of the totalitarian regime. 'By preserving the national memory, we form our national values of solidarity and trust, the basis of free and independent development of our multinational country.'
