Speaking at the XXXI session of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan on April 29 this year, the President proposed holding a nationwide referendum on amendments to the Constitution.  A little later, the head of state Tokayev K.K.  signed the Decree on holding a referendum on June 5.

The last time a nationwide referendum was held was in 1995 when the current Constitution was adopted.

It is worth noting that all previous amendments to the Constitution of the country were adopted by the Parliament.

The amendments will affect 33 articles of the Basic Law, thus, the Constitution will be updated by one third.

It is important that the population will be involved in the decision-making process.  The referendum will give every citizen of Kazakhstan an opportunity to take a direct part in determining the future of Kazakhstan.

Deputies of the Mazhilis of Parliament Gaukhar Nugmanova and Megerram Magerramov met today with representatives of the education sector, introduced them to the main tasks of the constitutional reform, including the final transition from a super presidential model to a presidential republic;  redistribution of a number of powers;  changing the role and status of the Parliament;  expanding the participation of the population in the government of the country;  strengthening mechanisms for protecting the rights of citizens, and also answered a number of questions.
